This was an article I wrote about 18 months ago before all the major algorithm shifts, social proof and social connectivity mandates. We have been providing and preaching the same philosophy for over five years now and just keep improving on what you MUST have in place. 

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is not the same as Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and that’s a fact! I truly welcome the opportunity of pointing out the HUGE variances and major distinguishing characteristics of each for you in this article. SE Optimization is primarily focused on how your website interacts with the major search engines from a recognition or viewable standpoint.

The following are some of the SEO hot points that must be addressed:

* Meta Description 
* Page Layout & Load Speed

* Internal Linking Structure 
* Inbound & Outbound Links 
* Readable Page Content & Display Formats

Sounds like quite a little list of to do’s and most people have one without the other or make the mistake of charging into SEM before they have the SEO properly setup. Having a website on the Internet is great, actually being found on page one of Google is absolutely priceless!

Why am I willing to give you this information? Simple, so you too can run the gauntlet and obtain the successful Internet exposure YOUR business deserves.

It all starts with a sound SEO foundation that will make the transition into the Search Engine Marketing – SEM area of your website promotion campaign very smooth and ultimately rewarding.

Doing It Right DOES Matter!!!

Back in November, Google revealed that it was testing algorithm changes that would examine what appears “above the fold” on web pages. It raised a number of questions about the kinds of hoops webmasters would have to jump through.

Last week, the changes were officially announced as the “Page Layout” update, which looks at the layout of a page and the amount of content you see on the page once you click on a result.

Was your site impacted by the Page Layout or “above the fold” update? Upon announcing the update, Google “Distinguished Engineer” Matt Cutts wrote:

Rather than scrolling down the page past a slew of ads, users want to see content right away. So sites that don’t have much content “above-the-fold” can be affected by this change. If you click on a website and the part of the website you see first either doesn’t have a lot of visible content above-the-fold or dedicates a large fraction of the site’s initial screen real estate to ads, that’s not a very good user experience. Such sites may not rank as highly going forward.

This is NOT the end of this “USER EXPERIENCE” oriented website ranking evaluation adjustment game. start with these in reverse order.
use googles keyword suggestion tool https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal to get keywords that are relevant to your site and have high search volumes

you need to do onsite and offsite optimisation, you cannot do good offsite optimisation without having done good onsite optimisation! – make sure you have used your keywords in the text of the pages and made content relevant and useful

Duplicate content isnt a problem unless it looks like you are trying to spam the search engines. shops and other sites which list items etc often have duplicate content for very good reasons and they dont get penalized by the search engines. dont copy others content and you will be fine.

many are telling that the link structure of a website is really important in terms of search engine optimization. But they don’t tell what exactly is this or why? Can anybody discuss this? I mean how a better link structure can help for optimizing the pages for search engines?

I had that same question. When you hear someone say you need to "backlink" or you need to "link build" that is the same thing. It took me awhile to figure that out. What that means is that other sites are pointing to your site which makes your site look juicy to the search engines. To make that a little more in simple english: from googles point of view, if other sites are pointing at your site, then that means those sites are giving your site a thumbs up. (I hope I am explaining that good enough)

There are link building services out there, however, you have to be careful because your link building should appear to be natural, which means other sites linking to you within a normal time frame. An example of NOT normal would be 5000 links in a week. That would appear to be "link spamming" or "link farming" in googles eyes which will result in your site not getting indexed at all.

There is a service that I found that is great, and is "natural link building" and they have videos that explain the whole process where you can understand it. They have a free and paid for version of it, I am using the paid for version, but you don’t have to. Try the free version and see if you like it first.

I hope this helps, I feel for people struggling out there, because I struggled for so long.
